Shiitake Mushroom Originally consumed mostly in East Asia and Japan, the Shiitake Mushroom is renowned for both its culinary and medicinal properties. It’s often called the “Elixir of Life.” and is also known as the “fragrant mushroom”.
Shiitake mushroom is now one of the world’s most widely sold fungi. Large and umbrella shaped, Shiitake Mushrooms grow on the trunks of fallen trees however with progress in technology, these are now grown on artificially created wood logs, created from wood saw dust.
These have a rich, smoky flavor with an exotic hearty aroma and firm texture. Shiitake Mushroom is also excellent as a base for pasta, meat and fish sauces, as well as risottos, stuffing or simply grilled. The Shiitake’s strong steak-like pungent flavor is a great meat substitute, and is delicious when finely chopped with veggies and other vegetarian side dishes.
